Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA)

The Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) is a comprehensive evaluation system used to identify movement limitations and uncover the underlying causes of pain or injury. At Spine & Sports Injury Center, our physical therapists use components of the SFMA to look beyond the site of pain and assess how the entire body moves as a system.

What It Is

SFMA is a structured, full-body movement screen that helps pinpoint dysfunctional movement patterns that may contribute to injury, pain, or decreased performance. By identifying mobility restrictions, stability deficits, or coordination issues, your provider can address the root cause of your symptoms rather than just the effects.

Who It Helps

SFMA can be valuable for individuals with:

  • Back, neck, or joint pain
  • Recurrent sports injuriesMuscle strains or overuse injuries
  • Postural dysfunction
  • Chronic stiffness or limited range of motion
  • Unexplained movement limitations affecting daily or athletic activities

What to Expect

Your provider will guide you through a series of simple movement tests, evaluating how different joints and muscle groups work together. These results help shape a targeted treatment plan, which may include manual therapy, corrective exercise, and movement retraining to restore optimal function.

Precautions

SFMA is a safe, noninvasive assessment suitable for most people. It may be modified for those with recent surgeries, acute injuries, or conditions that limit safe participation in certain movements.
