Functional Movement Screen (FMS)
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a specialized screening tool used to identify limitations or asymmetries in seven fundamental movement patterns. These patterns are essential for functional movement quality and are assessed in individuals with no current pain or known musculoskeletal injury.
What It Is
The FMS is designed to reveal weaknesses, mobility restrictions, and imbalances by placing you in controlled, challenging positions that require stability, coordination, and proper motor control. The seven test movements—covering fundamental locomotor, manipulative, and stabilizing actions—make it easy to observe where compensations occur and which areas need targeted improvement.
Who It Helps
The FMS is ideal for:
- Athletes seeking to improve performance and prevent injury
- Active individuals returning to sport or training after rehab
- People looking to optimize strength, stability, and movement efficiency
- Those who want to identify and address imbalances before they lead to injury
What to Expect
Your provider will guide you through the seven movement tests while scoring each pattern based on mobility, stability, and control. The results create a clear roadmap for a corrective exercise plan designed to improve movement quality, enhance performance, and reduce the risk of injury.
Precautions
The FMS is a safe, noninvasive screening suitable for most individuals. It is not intended for those currently experiencing pain or with acute musculoskeletal injuries—other assessments may be used in those case.
