Active Release Techniques (ART)®
Active Release Techniques (ART) is widely recognized as the gold standard in soft tissue treatment. Trusted by athletes and teams across every major professional sport, ART is one of the most efficient ways to reduce tightness, restore mobility, and improve performance. At Spine & Sports Injury Center, we use ART as both a diagnostic and treatment tool to deliver the highest level of care.
What It Is
ART is a hands-on therapy that targets muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. By combining precise pressure with specific patient movements, it breaks down scar tissue, releases adhesions, and restores proper function to overused or injured soft tissue.
Who It Helps
ART can address many of the conditions we see at our clinic, including:
- Neck and back pain
- Shoulder pain and rotator cuff injuries
- Golfer’s and tennis elbow
- Wrist and hand pain, including carpal tunnel syndrome
- Hip and knee pain
- Foot and ankle conditions, such as plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy
- Sciatica and other nerve entrapments
- Headaches and migraines
- Shin splints, muscle strains, and joint sprains
- Sports injuries and repetitive strain injuries
What to Expect
Your provider will evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of your soft tissues, feeling for restrictions caused by scar tissue or adhesions. Once identified, they will apply targeted pressure while guiding you through specific movements designed to release those restrictions. ART sessions are active and interactive—your participation helps maximize results.
Precautions
ART is safe for most patients, though it may be modified or avoided in cases of acute inflammation, recent fractures, severe osteoporosis, or certain vascular conditions. Your provider will assess whether ART is appropriate for you before beginning treatment.
