Unlike prolonged static stretching, AIS uses short, controlled stretches to lengthen muscles without causing irritation or triggering the body’s protective reflexes.

What It Is

Developed by Aaron Mattes, AIS combines active movement with a brief two-second stretch, allowing the muscle to relax and lengthen without activating opposing muscle contractions. This method not only enhances flexibility but also supports optimal blood flow, reduces muscle tension, and restores function to both superficial and deep fascia. AIS can be performed on its own or incorporated into a broader treatment plan to address movement restrictions and improve performance.

Precautions

AIS is safe for most individuals but may require modifications for those with acute injuries, severe joint instability, or certain neurological conditions. Your provider will assess your needs and adjust the technique as necessary.
